The Arts in the Elizabethan Era
The arts were very popular under the reign of Elizabeth the First. This was most likely because Queen Elizabeth adored all of the arts. The art of painting was dominated by portraiture, that were specifically in the form of miniatures. Miniatures came from the tradition of illuminated manuscripts and from Renaissance portrait medals. English writers who were influenced by Italian sonnets began to introduce complex poetic structures in both verse and prose. William Shakespeare's sonnets and plays became exceedingly popular in England and eventually Europe. Theater became a national pastime, commonly thought to be an effect of William Shakespeare's outstanding plays. Plays such as "Romeo and Juliet" or "Much Ado About Nothing"; most of which are still popular in modern times. In addition to Shakespeare, playwrights Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson flourished during this era.
